Breakfast:  At our own homes.

Lunch: What-a-burger in Kyle, TX

Dinner: Little Caesar's Pizza, Salad, Water

We started our trip at 9:50am.  We arrived without incident at the Chicago-owned Whataburger in Kyle. We finished the rest of our journey and arrived at FUMC San Benito at 8:45pm.  Pastor Melissa met us and gave us keys and passwords while Lori went with Alec to pick up our pizza.

A few changes were made to our work arrangement this year.  Larry Cox, who has been organizing our work for all the years that we've been down here, has pneumonia and wasn't able to get the ball rolling for us, but he did give us some contacts to work with.  Lori made a connection with a Methodist organization called Good Neighbor Settlement House.  They work with new immigrants, helping them make their way in the U.S.

After dinner, I made a late night trip to Walmart in San Benito for a few items for our work the next day.  I was tasked with trying to find 16 tubes of sugar cookie dough so that we could bake the 240 cookies that would be part of the dinner we would provide for the 120 immigrants waiting at the border.

Monday, June 17

Breakfast: Sausage and Pancakes, OJ/Milk/Coffee

Lunch: Turkey/Roast Beef/PB&J Sandwiches, Chips, Cookies, Water

Dinner: Spaghetti, Salad, Cupcakes, Lemonade/Water

Having failed miserably at Walmart the previous evening, I headed to HEB in the morning on my quest for sugar cookie dough. They had the 14 tubes that I needed!  Securing them all, I proceeded back to the church where Lori, Vicky, Rachel, and Coda began turning them into 240 snicker doodles.

Meanwhile the rest of the crew went to the Ebenezer Christian Church to check out what materials would be needed to complete the roofing project.  After some serious wheeling and dealing, Tony, Martin, and the rest of the crew got pricing on our materials.  All that was left was for me to follow up with the credit card to complete the transaction. (FYI, my credit card will allow me to purchase almost $1000 worth of building supplies some 600 miles away from home, but won't let me buy 2 tanks of gas at the same gas station without a top level security call to me).

I am working on some wifi issues, and I will post some more tomorrow.  I will also be sure that Lori shares her pictures with me from the other group's activities. By the way, our schedule has changed a little.  We will be going to Schlitterbahn on Friday and working on Thursday.

Tuesday, June 18

Breakfast: Biscuits/Bacon, OJ/Milk/Coffee

Lunch: Turkey/Roast Beef/PB&J Sandwiches, Chips, Cookies, Water

Dinner: Brisket, baked beans, potato salad, cookies/pudding/cupcakes, lemonade/water

We had a great day again today!  Our team of roofers were able to spend the entire day on the roof working not only to re-shingle it, but also repair some originally hidden roof problems.  Fortunately for us (and the church), Martin and Tony are able to do anything and they are both great at passing their knowledge on to the kids.

Meanwhile our second team was hard at work at Good Neighbor Settlement House in Brownsville.  The link will take you to their facebook page where you can read all about their mission. They worked at putting toiletry sets together to give to the refugees that needed them.  This facility not only works with refugees, but they also work with the homeless population of Brownsville. Feeding all of them 3 meals a day and offering them a place to cool off.

Wednesday, June 19

Breakfast: Scrambled Eggs/French Toast, OJ/Milk/Coffee

Lunch:  Turkey/Roast Beef/PB&J Sandwiches, Chips, Cookies, Water

Dinner: Burgers/Hotdogs, Chips, Pudding, Lemonade/Water

The Good Neighbor crew put together more kits today, and since they were so efficient at that task, they still had time to help clean the dorm area that is about to open.

Our roofers all but finished the roof.  There are only about 3 rows of shingles left to nail in place and some minor caulking to do around a couple of windows.  The crew really got moving today working as a well-oiled machine.

This evening we talked with the pastor about doing some work around this church next year while we stay. She is impressed with not only the amount of work we are able to accomplish, but also with the skill set that we come with.

Thursday, June 20

Breakfast: Pancakes/Bacon, OJ/Milk/Coffee

Lunch: Sandwiches - Turkey/Roast Beef/PB & J, chips, cookies, lemonade/water

Dinner: Chicken nuggets & mac-n-cheese, salad, lemonade/water

The roofing crew finished up today!  They were also able to caulk a couple of places to help prevent additional water damage in their office.  After dropping off the walkers and wheelchair at Larry's house, Alec and I returned the leftover materials to Matt's Building Supply and the roofing crew was officially done.

Meanwhile, the Good Neighbors' crew finished up their work, but did such a great job that they were asked to do some more work.

Tonight, we will head to the bus station where immigrants are dropped off so that they can get transportation out of Brownsville. We will pass out some of the kits that our crew put together and have a chance to talk with them and maybe even read to some of the children.
