Sunday, June 13 -- Travel Day, 1st night in Oklahoma

Day begins at BUMC at 9:40am

Go to Sunday school, then church, then eat lunch, then be back at church by 4pm to load your suitcase.  It is only 135 miles to Seeley Chapel so be ready for another quick car trip this year.  Yea!!!

Actual departure time:  5:25 (after picking up ice across the street – Ice, Ice Baby)

Pictures: Mission Group Picture     Unloading

Arrival time:  7:30pm

Dinner: Fajitas, refried beans, chips & salsa, salad, cookies, and tea

OH NO!!!  There isn’t a coffee maker here!!!  There may be some children sacrificed in the name of caffeine tomorrow morning.

Monday, June 14

My day began at 6:30 when I couldn’t sleep any longer because my tummy was rumbling.  I got up and knew it was going to be a good day.  I FOUND A PERCOLATOR!!  Thankfully, my grandmother had a percolator, so I knew how to use it, and Tony Lopez, Mike Fox, and I survived the first morning (and so did the kids).

We stripped all the siding off the parsonage, removed salvageable materials from inside the house, and began removing dry wall.  We managed to continue a couple of Oklahoma traditions:  it rained on us (with 50% chance of more rain tomorrow) and we found a poisonous snake.  This snake dwarfed last year’s copperhead.  This one was a 4ft long, 7yr old rattlesnake.  Doug Cook won’t believe me, but this was a beautiful snake.  I don’t think any of our pictures will do it justice, so we’re bringing the body home to Josh Goode.

We secured a place to shower.  It’s at a church camp called Camp Bond, about 13 miles away.  But, we were invited to come during their chapel time, which means no showers until after 8:30pm each night.  We are cleaning up the best we can – Tracy Espinoza knows what we mean.

Forecast is for much more rain tomorrow.  L

Tonight is Indian Taco night.  Some of the members of the congregation will come out to feed us dinner.  I hope that there is also social time before, during, and after dinner.

I made the trip into Tishomingo this morning to update the website, order 6 Flags tickets, pick up a couple of items from the store, and see if I could find myself a cot to replace my holey air bed.  As an added bonus, I found a video store that would rent to me, so we have movies for the rest of the week as evening entertainment.  Tonight we’re watching Old Dogs (tonight because it’s a new movie and I have to return it when I go to town to upload this update).

In the morning, the group worked on removing sheet rock, insulation, and exterior walls.  After lunch, we got a big boost – Laura’s son Jess, her brother Greg, and his son Gary.  They all came ready to work.  Keith was up on the roof with Tony and me stripping shingles.  Gary drove the trailer over to the burn pile, and Jess helped with interior demolition.

We were indeed treated to Indian Tacos, socializing, and a special treat – worship (with Native American hymns) and communion led by Rev. Lin Stern.  Worship wrapped up in time to allow us to get to the showers at our appointed time.  The beginning of Old Dogs was really good, sleep was better.  J

Breakfast:  Pancakes, bananas, apples, grapes, coffee, Sunny D, and milk

Lunch: Sandwiches, chips, salad, cookies, and lemonade

Dinner: Indian Tacos and lemonade

We planned on getting up early to finish stripping off the shingles.  Instead, we waited until it got really HOT to get on the roof and finish the other half of the shingles.  While Tony and I were working on heat stroke on the roof, the rest of the crew kept working on removing studs, cleaning up loose debris from inside, and picking up shingles to take to the dump pile.

We did make time to get the smoker set up before we went to work.  After getting the charcoal all nice and hot, we rounded up some pecan wood from the yard to get a nice tasty finish to the meat.  The brisket had been marinating since Saturday night, so hopefully it will be wonderful!

Keith, Gary, Jess, and Laura’s mother Martha all came out to help after lunch.  Tony, Keith, and Jess were up in the roof prying off the decking, Krista and I were on the ground with Martha pulling nails out of the decking.  Melissa, Rachel, and Jessica got to work removing nails from 2 x 4’s that are going to be reused in repairs to the church.  All of the kids worked on loading the trailer to take to the burn pile.  We are going to try to keep working until 5pm, then come in clean up a little and eat dinner.  I am going to Tishomingo to upload today’s update and pictures from yesterday.  Tomorrow will include pictures from today.  We plan on bringing down the last part of the roof tomorrow before we pull the rest of the building down.

The smoked brisket was a success.  Martha, Keith, and Gary all ate dinner with us.  Jess stayed, but didn’t eat because he had someone who was taking him out to dinner later.

Mike is coming back to Garland to take care of some work that must be done this week.  He and Nico will meet back up with us on Friday night or Saturday morning before we head out to 6 Flags.

Breakfast:  Bacon, eggs, biscuits, coffee, Sunny D, and milk

Lunch: Jessica’s grilled cheese, chips, grapes, apples, iced tea

Dinner: Smoked brisket, grillin’ beans, snack cakes, iced tea

Most of the decking is removed from the roof.  Tony and I will finish taking those down this morning, then we have to remove 10 of the rafters for use later, then we can pull it down!!!  While Tony and I are on the roof this morning, the rest of our crew gets the monotonous work of pulling nails out of the decking and the remaining 2 x 4’s.  They’ll also start gathering up all the tools and getting everything ready for the final downing of the former parsonage.

We ended up pulling 15 rafters down, then knocked down the remaining inside studs, then we put the towrope around parts of the wall  and Keith pulled first one corner, then the middle section of studs, then with the last corner, the house came down!

Our reward was a refreshing trip to Delaware Creek.  We tried to go to a swimming hole in the Blue River, but the river was still too high from the flood waters earlier in the week.  Everyone had fun and after a refreshing hour, we headed back to the church for dinner.  We are headed into Tishomingo for gasoline and uploading.

Breakfast: French toast, fruit, coffee, Tampico, and milk

Lunch:  Sandwiches, salad, chips, cookies, and tea

Dinner:  Burritos/quesadillas, chips, salsa, refried beans, and tea

Sleep in!  (Well at least the kids did.)  Tony and I were up by 7am, making coffee and marveling at how good a percolator makes coffee taste.  After a leisurely breakfast, we packed up the grill (Thanks Lee Nolen!!!) and burger fixin’s and headed to Sulfur, OK.  Once there, we found the National Park and checked out the Wildlife Center (Buffalo are really big!)  We got directions to the Chickasaw Nation Cultural Center, but found out it doesn’t really open until July 24.  So much for our inside info.  J  The kids were crushed.  We went back to the park, set up the grill and ate hamburgers.  Then we waited the required 30 minutes and went swimming in the natural, spring-fed creek there.  A couple of hours of swimming and we headed back to the church.  We had a wonderful meal of chicken burgers, salad, and cookies.  We’ll be headed to our showers in about 10 minutes.  After the showers, I’ll head into Tishomingo to upload today’s fun.

Breakfast:  Breakfast tacos, fruit, coffee, Tampico, and milk

Lunch:  Hamburgers, chips, fruit snacks, and tea
